He pulled in a deep breath. “Deal.”

She stopped and turned around. Her eyes wide on her face. “What?”

“I said, deal.” He swallowed. “During the day, you’re mine. You do what I say. At night, I’m all yours.”

A Gift From A Friend

I wanted to share a special gift I received at Lori Forster's Reader & Author Get Together 2011 by a dear sweet fan of mine. I've known her for a while now through yahoo loop conversations, blog visits and personal emails. But at the RAGT, I was able to finally meet her for the first time in person.

Her name is Teresa and after getting a huge hug from her, she also gave me these beautiful earrings. I wanted to show everyone just how lovely they are and to thank Teresa for thinking of me. I'm so grateful to have them and so touched that she thought enough to make them for me.

Romance fans are the best!

“That would be a crime against man,” he sighed. With lightning speed, he flipped her so she was under him, giggling. “I hope you were ready for a long night. Because that little display you put on was only an appetizer, as far as I’m concerned.”

Sarah bit her lip and looked to the side before stage whispering, “Can I tell you a secret?”

He nodded, wondering where it was going.

She scooted until she was away from his grip and opened the nightstand drawer. Then she tossed a bottle onto the bed between them.

Pete picked up the cool tube and turned it. Yup, it’s exactly what he thought it was. Lube.

“Sarah.” He looked up and saw her cheeks on fire. But her eyes were steady. “Are you asking for—”

“Yes.”

Guest Blogger Rayne Hall: FEEL THE FEAR

To make a scene suspenseful or scary, show the point-of-view character's fear, and allow the reader to feel it. Telling the reader that the character is afraid doesn't work:

  • He felt frightened.
  • She was scared.
  • I grew very afraid.
  • He experienced a really terrible emotion of utter fear, a feeling that was indescribably scary.

Instead, 'show' the fear. The showing is more visceral than visual, describing the physical effects.
When a human is frightened, lots of things happen to the body:
  • The person may feel hot or cold, may shiver or sweat.
  • The heart beats faster, harder, louder. The person may hear or feel their own heart beat in unusual places: in their ears, in their throat.
  • The breathing changes. Usually it becomes faster and shallower, though for some people it may deepen and slow.
  • The palms may become damp, the mouth dry, the stomach tight, the throat clogged.
  • Fear can make a person yawn, though you need to be careful with this so you don't accidentally suggest boredom.
  • The skin reacts. There may be goose-pimples ('goosebumps' in American). The little hairs may stand up in some places. Often, there's an itch, most commonly on the head, though it can occur anywhere, and this itch may be very inconvenient when someone tries hard not to move.
  • The stomach may clench, or churn, or feel like it's filled with ice.
  • Some people feel fear in strange places, e.g. the fillings of their teeth hurt.
  • During prolonged apprehension, pressure on the bladder build, resulting in an urge to use the loo ('bathroom' in American). In moments of panic, the bladder may open, and in a state of terror, the bowels may loosen.
Simply insert a sentence about a physical symptom, and the reader's heart will accelerate with the hero's, and shivers will crawl over their skin just like the heroine's. If possible, avoid clichéd phrases, such as 'Shivers ran down her spine'.

Here are some phrases you can adapt for your own use:
Fear prickled her scalp.
Her breath stalled.
Fear clenched like a tight first around my chest.
Tendrils of terror curled into her stomach.
Cold sweat trickled down her sides.
His heart thudded louder and louder.
Fear clogged his throat.
My pulse pounded in my throat.
Cold sweat glued the shirt to his back.
Chills chased up my back.
Common sense warned me to stay in my hiding place, but I needed a toilet. Now.
The sight made the back of my neck tingle.
I could hear the blood rushing through my head.
My skull seemed to shrink.
A ball of fear formed in my stomach.
My stomach knotted.
My stomach swelled with fear.
A weight seemed to press on her chest, robbing her of breath.
A thousand ants seemed to crawl over my skin.

You can insert several 'physical symptom' sentences into a scary scene. You may want to vary the symptoms, e.g. when she first feels foreboding, her scalp tingled. When she realises there is danger, her stomach tightens and her palms grow wet. When the villain involves her in conversation, her throat is so dry she can't get a word out. When she's tied up and she hears the bomb ticking, her stomach contorts, cold sweat soaks her clothes, and her heart thuds as if it was trying to break out of her ribcage.

At the scariest moment, you can cluster two or three visceral effects closely together.

Although you can use physical symptoms of fear several times in each scary scene, take care not to use them much elsewhere in your novel. If the hero's heart starts pounding every time a door bangs and if sweat trickles down his spine every time he faces a challenge, he'll come across as a wimp.

Choose symptoms appropriate to the situation, the character, the desired scariness-level, and the genre - and don't overdo it. Opening bladders and loosening bowels are fine for the climax of an ultra-scary thriller or horror novel - but in a Regency romance they're out of place.

Do you remember an occasion when you were anxious, frightened, panicked, or terrified? Where in your body did you feel the fear? When you think of something scary - dentists, spiders, cliffs, or whatever frightens you - how does your body react to the thoughts? I'd love to hear about 'symptoms' of fear, especially unexpected or weird ones.

If you want to discuss this post, or if you have questions about this technique or about writing scary scenes, leave a comment. I'll be around for a week and will reply.

A Taste For Romance By Virginia Campbell

June is a month of change. School is out. Summer begins. The heat is on. However, for our friends in Australia, June is the beginning of Winter. Fortunately, Australia has many different climates and growing areas, and it has an extensive range of produce coming in to season at different times.

Our Farmer's Markets here in the States are beginning to bloom with gorgeous produce and other seasonal offerings. At any given time, somewhere in the world, garden goodness is ripe for the picking! We celebrate Father's Day in June, and it's a great time to enjoy fresh food full of flavor.

I grew up without my Dad, but I had the most wonderful male role model I could want, and that was my beloved grandfather. His name was Tazewell, and his nick name was Taz. My nick name was Little Taz. Yep, we were close. I was a "Paw Paw's girl". I only had my grandfather for nineteen years, and he was the light of my life. He's been gone for over thirty years, and I miss him more than I can say.

My favorite Summer memories are of the times I spent with my grandparents working in our garden. My grandfather was a natural "master gardener". He grew the best tomatoes that I have ever tasted! One of a Southerner's favorite meals is a slice of juicy, ripe homegrown tomato on a fresh, hot butter biscuit! I used to love to help my grandfather plant the tomatoes. Dig a little hole, add some water, drop in the little plant, pat the dirt down, add a little water, repeat. On and on we went, row after row, until we were done. It was never work to me, it was just a special time shared with my Paw Paw.

I have always loved to cook, and I began preparing the meals for my family when I was just ten years old. By that time, my grandmother was no longer able to grocery shop and cook our meals. She taught me how to cook, and we managed pretty well. My mom and grandfather worked full-time and I went to school. We each did what we could to keep it all together. My grandfather's favorite pie was mincemeat, and I decided to make him a pie one Christmas. It was a beautiful mincemeat pie with a golden, fluted-edge crust. I wanted to be just like my grandmother, so I sat my pie on a chair on the back porch so that it would cool quicker. My grandfather could hardly wait for a taste of that pie. It was a wonderfully clear and cold December day with a bright blue sky. Not a cloud in sight. A great day for birds! When I went back to get my prize-worthy pie, birds had completely pecked away the carefully fluted edge of the pie crust. They left a perfect ring of crumbs around the pie pan. I was devastated! My grandfather loved to tease me, and he told me that since there were no dead birds in sight, the pie was probably safe to eat! I cried, but he gave me a hug and took over that pie. He brushed off the top and cut away a narrow ring around the edge. Over the next few days, he managed to consume the whole pie. No one else would touch it! He told me many times that it was the best mincemeat pie he ever ate. It was the only one I ever made!

A man who takes care of his family with his wealth is a provider. A hero is a man who takes care of his family in all circumstances, especially when wealth is unavailable or unattainable. A man with a compassionate heart, strong principles, honor and humor will always be heroic to those who love him. Money cannot buy those qualities. What makes a man most attractive is a quiet confidence, a definite masculinity, that shows itself in thought and action. Handsome men are sometimes merely "pretty", nice to look at, but not always substantial in personality. My grandfather was a modest man, quiet and classy, funny, immaculate, mannerly, polite, and well-liked by everyone he met. He was the most responsible person that I have ever met. He was an excellent provider and protector, always looking out for our family. He was an amazingly astute judge of character, and I never knew him to be wrong. He was a medium-sized man, but he left huge shoes to fill. They remain unfilled to this day. I would love to hear about your fathers, grandfathers. "like a dad" special friends, and the men in your life who are memorable role models.

Super Hero Sandwich
1 long loaf crusty Italian bread (1 lb. or more)
2/3 cup olive oil mayonnaise
1 tbsp. minced garlic
1/2 tsp dried Italian seasoning
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 pound fully cooked ham, thinly sliced
1/2 pound thinly sliced cooked turkey
1/4 pound thinly sliced hard salami
1/4 pound sliced provolone cheese
1/4 pound sliced mozzarella cheese
1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
1 large firm tomato, thinly sliced
1 medium green pepper, thinly sliced into rings

Cut bread in half lengthwise; slightly hollow out top and bottom. In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, garlic, Italian seasoning and pepper; brush on cut sides of bread top and bottom. On the bottom half, layer half of the meats, cheeses, onion, tomato, and green pepper. Repeat layers. Replace bread top. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap; refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Slice into wedges to serve.

1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

In separate bowl, combine sugar and eggs, beat until well blended. Add oil and vanilla; beat until combined. Stir in zucchini. Add flour mixture; stir just until moistened. Stir in nuts and chocolate chips. Spoon evenly into loaf pans. Bake in preheated oven for 55 to 60 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes. "Provocative Ponderings" By Sarah McNeal

A story doesn’t have to be filled with sex scenes to make it hot and sexy. What romance stories need is tenderness, endearing gestures of love, thoughtfulness, strength of character with a promise of enduring devotion and, most of all, it is the anticipation of that passionate sex scene that makes us want to get to the next page and the next page and the next. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I confess I have jumped ahead to read those intimate scenes I know are in there. Once I am assured that there will be a hot scene on down the line, I can go back, content in reading how they got to that scene.

I occasionally indulge in a sweet romance where there are no sex scenes—even inspirational books and I have been completely satisfied with the romance and the behind closed doors sex. These stories take an author with special skills to make the reader swoon over a mere kiss. After all, the reader has waited a long time to get to that kiss. Marta Perry writes inspirational Amish romances. They hum with sexual tension, tenderness and wisdom. The emotions run deep. I am presently reading a delightful romance by Jo Beverly and three quarters of the way through it with only a few kisses between the hero and heroine but, oh my word, I am engulfed in their love story. They are intelligent and witty but, even more, they interact with such tenderness and respect for one another, bolstering each other’s courage when old wounds cause them pain. The story drives me on—will they make it? Will everything turn out as they hope?

Now don’t get me wrong, I like a spicy erotic story now and then. Authors who write a strong story line, something gained or lost, some character who has changed his or her ways to attain the love of their lives has to be there or it won’t interest me. I won’t care about the story if the characters are just there to have sex. I want them to have something big to lose or gain—something so huge that it may make or break them. The sex scenes are just sprinkles on the cupcake because the real story is like that delicious cake beneath the surface but it’s constant.

Harmonica Joe’s Reluctant Bride is spicy but it’s the dialogue between the characters and the sexual tension that I hope drives the reader to turn the pages. Both Joe and Lola have something huge to lose and something they both want desperately.

A haunted house, a trunk and a date with destiny.

Harmonica Joe’s Reluctant Bride
By Sarah McNeal
Available at Western Trail Blazer Novels  | Amazon |  B&N
Also available in print

Blurb:
Lola Barton discovers a warp in time in an old trunk when she falls into 1910. She finds herself married to Joseph Wilding, a stranger shadowed by secrets. Mistaken for Callie McGraw, a thief and a woman of ill repute, Lola finds her life is threatened by a scoundrel. Joe stands between her and certain death. With danger threatening all around and secrets keeping them apart, can Joe and Lola find their destiny together? Or will time and circumstance forever divide them?

Excerpt:
Morning found them wrapped in each other’s arms. Lola watched as the sun spread its golden light into the room and gilded Joe’s hair. He looked like an angel lying there so innocent and sweet. She feared she was beginning to have feelings for him and not because they had spent a night in hot, delicious sex.

She felt like a ship sailing in uncharted seas. There had been a few men in her bed before. She had been in love, or thought she had, a time or two. Joe wasn’t like any man she had ever known. There was something mysterious about him, something sad. As opposed to the men in the twenty-first century, he possessed genuineness in the makeup of his character. She never met a man like Joe before. The men she knew always carried with them a hidden agenda. Joe didn’t seem capable of lying or cheating. For the first time in her life, she could trust someone—and a man at that. If only...
